Dog groomer Fiona Brook is celebrating two “firsts”. One is setting up her own business in Lynn and the other is taking top prize in an international grooming competition.

Fiona, from Fakenham, has just opened her own dog-grooming business, Pride 2 Groom, based in Dickie’s Pet Centre, on Friesian Way, Hardwick Narrows.

“Turning a passion into a successful business is a dream come true for me,” said Fiona. “Ever since I can remember I have been very passionate about grooming.

“I started when I was about ten years old and entered my first grooming competition aged just 11 years old. I have remained one of the youngest people to enter a grooming competition at this level.

“When I was 13, I became Young Kennel Club Groomer of The Year in 2003 with a standard poodle and then went on to win the same competition in 2004 with an American cocker spaniel. At grooming competitions now I compete against some of the best groomers in the country and I am still constantly placed in some very tough classes, of which I am extremely proud.”

Fiona’s latest success was at the Mastergroom competition held in Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, in April, where she won first place in the Open Handstrip Gundog class with her own dog an American cocker spaniel called Dori. She also sat the International Certified Master Groomers (ICMG) exam and scored 97/100.

She won third place in the Open Toy and Miniature Poodles class with her miniature poodle, Oliver, and in the ICMG exam, scored 91/100.

“It was a significant win for me. It was a special competition and the standards are very high,” said Fiona, who holds a National Diploma in Animal Management, is City and Guilds qualified and is now working towards the ICMG qualification.

“I do all kinds of grooming and have groomed dogs for the show ring who have gone on to become champions. I can do blow drys, cleaning ears, cutting nails, styling – whatever the clients want.

“I have done a number of grooming demonstrations for salons, colleges and events around the country and enjoy this aspect of helping people to expand their knowledge.”

She has her own dedicated area for working in Dickie’s Pet Centre which is safe and secure for dogs. She is open Mondays to Fridays 9.30am to 5pm and on Saturdays from 9.30am to 4pm.
