Since moving business premises just two months ago a Lynn clothing firm has seen a phenomenal rise in orders.

Double G Clothing, a clothes and fabric wholesaler, moved from one unit in Horsley Fields Industrial Estate to another nearly twice its size at Christmas time.

Gordon Chilvers, who founded the business along with Graham Bennett in 1993, said the move had had a huge impact on business.

He said: “January and February are usually the worse two months of the year, but this time it has been absolutely tremendous. We have seen records slashed. Since we moved at Christmas, we have already taken on 61 new customers. Just last week one customer who usually places an order for 30 garments increased the order to 339. The upturn in business has been like this day after day.

“The new premises, which are just under 7,000 sq ft, have made us realise just how much we had outgrown the previous unit. We have had two new embroidery machines installed and a new print machine. All our embroidery and printing is done inhouse at King’s Lynn and we are in total control of the garments, throughout the whole process from sourcing to printing the garments. Lynn is the hub of our business.”

He said that the move was a major step forward for the business and that recruitment in the future would be a natural progression.

The company employs 26 staff which includes employees at the firm’s retail shops in Hunstanton, Sheringham, Cromer, Wroxham and March, which trade as Identity.

Gordon and Graham, hence the name Double G, first set up their business in a 12ft by 11ft spare bedroom, and at that time they already had between them 45 years experience in the wholesale distribution trade.

Starting off with a mobile van sales service supplying retail outlets across East Anglia, they expanded into a unit at Lynn’s Hardwick Narrows Industrial Estate, and eventually moved to Horsley Fields estate.

They started offering an embroidery service to their customers which expanded and in February 2009, they bought their main contractor and moved the business inhouse along with the staff who were employed by them. The business has continued to expand supplying the likes of the NHS, RAF, play schools, nurseries, schools, colleges, universities, commercial industry and sports clubs.

As the business has grown, then Double G has also sponsored numerous charities and events, including King’s Lynn Town Reserves FC, Bishops Lynn FC, Macmillan FC Wisbech, Fightnitelive TV and Fenman Fightnight. It is also proud to help the likes of Bridge for Heroes, Reach for a Star and the Craig Prior Memorial Fund. Over the past two years Double G has also sponsored the Lynn News and Spalding Local Education Awards to encourage school and college sporting achievements.
