Father-and-son team Derek and Daniel Hardy, of South Lynn-based business A1 Fencing and Work Services, are delighted to have been honoured by RAF Marham in recognition of their “outstanding” contribution to a major project.
At a surprise presentation at the base earlier this month, the pair were awarded the Station’s Commander’s Commendation for the significant part they played in Project Harrow, which involves preparatory work ahead of the construction of facilities for Lightning II fighter jets.
A1 Fencing are sub contractors to BAE Systems who undertake general maintenance work and under Project Harrow were carrying out office moves to relocate personnel. However, due to a number of unforeseen circumstances, their roles soon expanded.
The citation reads: “Derek and Daniel demonstrated an outstanding level of flexibility and dedication to Project Harrow where they didn’t just deal with the office moves as planned, but a range of activities that could not have been pre-planned and which, without their skill and flexibility, would have been very costly to individually resolve and resource.
“Some of the unplanned activities included storing equipment in their own facility temporarily, cutting open an antiquted safe which had long since lost its key and building, at very short notice a cryogenic liquid nitrogen storage area use. As a two-man team, with engineering and construction background, they used their own resources on many occasions to just get the job done – all at the original cost quoted.”
Derek and Daniel have worked flat out since November, including many evenings and weekends, to get tasks completed within a certain time frame.
The citation continues: “Having grapsed the importance of the project, their willingness to help out and provide technical solutions was extremely refreshing and at times, humbling.
“All relocation projects need a Derek and Daniel to deal with the myriad of unplanned and unforeseeable issues. The RAF prides itself on its ‘can do’ attitude and yet we could learn a thing or two from the tireless and do anything approach of A1 Fencing.”
Said Derek: “This award came as a total surprise. We attended the base for someone’s leaving presentation and then we were asked to step forward to receive this commendation. We feel it’s very special as normally these are not given to contractors as far as we know. Our family and friends are over the moon.”
Derek is an engineer and Daniel, 27, studied construction at college before teaming up with his father to operate the business set up 14 years ago.
