Family-run business Mick Ward Heating and Plumbing Ltd, of Runcton Holme, is this year celebrating 40 years of trading.
Since initially setting up as a one-man operation, Mick Ward has built up a business which now employs nine and carries out all kinds of plumbing and mechanical installations over an area with a 60-mile radius.
The company’s team of nine, includes his wife, Sue, a director who as well as Mick now works part time, and has been involved in the office since the outset. Son, Simon, is also a director and has taken over the day-to-day running of the business.
In addition to the 40th anniversary of founding the business, this year also marks 25 years since Simon joined and 30 years since technical plumber Trevor Crane joined the firm.
Throughout the years, the company has seen 15 people complete apprenticeships with several now running their own businesses. Two of them were named plumbing apprentice of the year at the College of West Anglia and at present, two are in their final college year completing training on gas installation.
Said Simon: “We are very proud of our apprentices and pleased to see young people progress their careers in the industry. Trevor has helped them along their way, sharing and teaching them his craftsman’s skills.
“For people who enter into the plumbing industry, it’s a worthwhile career where you are never without a job. Plumbers are always going to be needed and it’s often difficult to find a good professional.”
Mick Ward, managing director, began his trade after being offered a position with Neville Playford. In 1973 he took a course in heating design at Wisbech College and in June 1976 went into business taking on an apprentice shortly afterwards. In 1982 the business was registered as Mick Ward (Heating and Plumbing) Ltd.
The business carries out industrial, commercial and residential heating and plumbing contracts from small plumbing works to complete plumbing and mechanical installations. Over the years, the company has completed refurbishment work on Lynn’s Duke’s Head Hotel, carried out installations at local schools and was awarded the contract to install heating and plumbing systems in 15 residential properties at RAF Marham.
It is an Anglian Water A1 approved contractor and registered members of Gas Safe, OFTEC, the Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors and is CHAS accredited.
