Wells shop keeper Maria Matthews is giving an extra boost to the town’s economy by opening her second shop in the resort.
She is a well known figure in the town having opening her first outlet, T&M Shoes in Staithe Street, now called Shoe Stop, with business partner Teresa Grange in 1988.
Teresa has long since left the business, but Maria has gone from strength to strength, opening a second Shoe Stop store in Holt 18 years ago and a third in Cromer in 2002.
Recently she decided to close her Holt shop so that she could concentrate her business in Wells, where she first started 27 years ago. Now she has opened Kidz Stop, a new children’s shoes and clothing outlet, just across the road from the Well Post Office which is managed by her daughter Michelle.
Maria said: “I felt there was nowhere in Wells where young mums could find a good selection of quality children’s shoes and clothes. Before I opened Kidz Stop they had to go to Holt or Fakenham, maybe even Norwich, but now there’s somewhere on their doorstep.”
Kidz Stop also sells men’s and women’s clothing by leading brand, Animal.
Maria’s intention is that her shop will become a meeting place for mums too.
She said: “I’d like to hold a coffee morning on Mondays for young mums so they can meet up and socialise with each other. If there are any out there who would be interested, I would love to hear from them.
“I’m also planning to hold discount days and run competitions for local youngsters.”
