Shoppers in Gaywood can not only look forward to keeping a traditional butcher’s in its centre, but also to being served by one who sings his heart out.
Matthew sings anything from Elvis to Olly Murs numbers performing as solo artist “Mischief”. He plays at gigs in Lynn, London, Peterborough and further afield – and he may be entertaining his customers in Gaywood as Christmas approaches.
“I might strike up a few carols,” said Matthew, 50, who has lived in Lynn for 15 years and has worked as a butcher ever since he left school. He opened the doors to his shop M. K. Pearce last week and is looking forward to the challenge of running his own business.
As well as cuts of meat, he is also selling sausage rolls, pork pies and Cornish pasties. “One of my specialities is going to be South African sausages,” said Matthem. “They are made with beef, pork and different spices. I have met several South Africans in Lynn who have said there is nowhere where they can buy them.”
At present he is running the shop on his own, but may in future be helped by his wife, Kim. “Hopefully I will get our five children involved in the business too, so it will be a proper family business,” he said.
He is also planning to supply businesses in the catering trade.
