Intrepid supermarket managers will be swapping shopping aisles for road and sea next month as part of a nationwide fundraising drive.
Staff from West Norfolk’s three Sainsbury’s stores will be joining managers from 19 other stores across East Anglia for a Sport Relief Triathlon in Hunstanton and Lynn.
Sainsbury’s is the official sponsor of the charity event, and to help promote its launch staff will be taking part in the triathlon on March 12.
They will start with a swim in the sea at Hunstanton Sailing Club, before cycling around 16 miles to Sainsbury’s on Lynn’s Hardwick Estate and then a two-mile run to the store in the town centre.
The managers will include Chris Pardoe, from the Hardwick store, Simon Cross, from the town centre store, and Mark Lane, from the Hunstanton store.
Hunstanton’s deputy manager Ben Aldous, who has organised the event, will also be taking part.
He said: “This is a big challenge given how cold the sea will be in March.
“Some of us will be doing all three stages, but we are not professional athletes so others will be doing it as a relay.
“We are using the event for our store managers to lead the fundraising for our colleagues across the region to raise money for Sport Relief. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
Mr Aldous said there had been a “fantastic” community response to the charity event already, with Hunstanton’s Watersport School offering to provide wetsuits for the swim and help from the Sailing Club, too.
