200 call for pier decision u-turn

ALMOST 200 people have now put their name to a petition in the ongoing row over the lost Hunstanton pier.

The petition calls for West Norfolk Council to overturn a decision to formally amend a legal document, which protesters argue allowed the development of an arcade on the town’s green without the replacement of a pier.

The petition also calls for the reclassification of the green at Hunstanton as a town green to prevent “commercial encroachment”.

It is the latest twist in a long-running row which began after the pier was blown down in a gale in 1978 and the original adjoining arcade building was subsequently destroyed by fire in 2000, but later rebuilt.

Campaigner and Hunstanton Civic Society member John Maiden is also threatening the council could end up in court having to explain through judicial review its decision to change the legal document, if it does not back down.

The council agreed to vary the legal document relating to the pier last month in a bid to draw a line under the saga, formally releasing Hunstanton Pier Company from its historic obligation to maintain and repair the pier.

At the same time it published a detailed document arguing it was correct to grant planning permission for the new arcade and stating no court would enforce action to make Hunstanton Pier Company rebuild the pier after so long.
