Bird flu restriction to lift in Swaffham

NEXT week will see lifting of the restriction zone affecting Swaffham and Breckland that was imposed after the outbreak of a deadly strain of bird flu at Redgrave, near Diss, last month.

The requirement for poultry keepers to house birds and keep them isolated from wild birds to try to prevent spread of the H5N1 strain of avian flu was lifted in the restriction zone on Monday.

But the ban on bird gatherings and taking birds out of the restricted zone is continuing until the remaining preventative measures are lifted at 11am on Wednesday barring any further outbreaks.

Poultry auctioneer Fabian Eagle, of North Pickenham, said the restrictions had made life awkward for hobbyists who thrive on taking their birds to shows, fairs and auctions. His Saturday poultry auctions in Lynn Road, Swaffham, have been going ahead without live birds. “There won’t be a live sale of birds at Swaffham until January 12.
