Crime watch special event
A SPECIAL crime prevention event will be held at Lynn's Vancouver Quarter on Tuesday, looking at bicycle and shed safety.
It’s the latest initiative in Norfolk Constabulary’s crime prevention schemes of Shedwatch and Bikewatch.
The empty premises of the former FOPP music store on the corner of Broad Street and St Dominics Square will be used, with experts on hand to give advice throughout the day.
A shed will be put inside the premises and used to demonstrate the various methods to improve security. The fire service has also agreed to come along with a fire appliance and provide basic safety advice, as well as give information on how to prevent garden and shed fires.
A Shedwatch campaign has been launched in a bid to prevent shed and garage crime during the spring – a time of year when police see an increase in the number of thefts from these buildings.
Large power equipment, bikes and hand tools are often targeted, yet there are simple practical methods of preventing them from being taken or property-marked so if they are recovered they can be returned.
As part of funding provided by the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, there will be property marking for the bicycles through Selectamark, a security marking company. The marking is free, provided people take their bikes along on the day (just remember to walk the bikes through the shopping centre and not ride them).
Representatives from Selectamark will be present to provide a display and demonstration of the various options available for marking property inside the home and i n the garden so it can easily be returned if recovered.
A Norfolk County Council casualty reduction officer has also agreed to attend with advice and handouts to ensure children are safe on their bikes and on the road.
During the day there will also be representatives from a number of different agencies and organisations to provide further advice and demonstrations on the numerous ways of protecting property and belongings.
The police and council safer neighbourhood teams will also be on hand to assist with any queries local residents might have.
