East Rudham bells to ring again
BELLS are set to ring out at East Rudham on Sunday to mark completion of a mammoth restoration project.
"For many years, the three bells in the tower of St Mary's Church were silent," said Rector Father Edward Bundock.
"They could not be rung because of decay to the frame and fittings which had had no maintenance since 1872."
In May 2006, an appeal was launched for funds for renovation of the bells and to add three more to give a ring of six.
And the bells will be rung for the first time at a rededication service at the church at 11am on Sunday conducted by Bishop of Lynn the Right Reverend James Langstaff.
"The appeal was very generously supported by local people and the Heritage Lottery Fund added 20,000 making the project viable," said Fr Bundock, adding funding had also come from the Manifold Trust, Keltek Trust and Norwich Diocesan Association of Church Bellringers.
Volunteers will ring the bells, having been recruited from the village and neighbouring areas and trained by experienced local ringers.
Fr Bundock hopes the new ring will also attract ringers from across the country who are anxious to try the bells themselves.
