Future of Lynn café in balance

THE future of a popular town centre café will come under the spotlight today (7) when council planners discuss a scheme to demolish the building to make way for 33 new apartments.

Lynn Leisure is hoping to develop the Pedlars Hall Caf, on Lynn's Albion Street, to create a mix of one and two-bedroomed apartments along with two bed-sit units.

But the proposal has been recommended for refusal by officers at West Norfolk Council, who believe using the site as a residential development would not be compatible with the area.

Concerns have also been raised about the constraints which could be put on bus and taxi services operating from the site, while adequate provision for affordable housing has not been made.

A final decision on the scheme will now be made by the council's development control board at a meeting today (7).

The council has received two petitions objecting to the plans, including one from caf owner Suzann George, of Swaffham, who has stated that her business offers a crucial facility for disabled people as well as bus drivers, passengers and shoppers.

A further six letters of objection have been received which raise concerns about the loss of a valuable community resource and an historic building, while expressing worries about noise pollution and additional traffic.

The council's planning policy and regeneration sections have also objected, stating the proposed use could prejudice the future redevelopment of the area to provide additional retail floor space for the town centre.
