Girl sells Poppies after stealing from village store
A 13-YEAR-old girl has been selling Remembrance Day poppies to make amends after she was caught stealing two bottles of orange juice from a village store.
The decision of allowing her to sell poppies was agreed by the shopkeeper and the teenager as well as her parents.
Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Sally Calaby of the Dersingham and Gayton Neighbourhood Policing Team arranged the meeting which is part of the police's restorative justice intervention.
An agreement was also made that the youngster would pay back the value of the stolen orange juice and not enter the shop for the next two months.
PCSO Calaby said: "Restorative justice gives young people, who are starting to get involved in crime or anti-social behaviour the chance to work with police and their own community to understand the consequences of their actions and to make amends for them, without automatically heading into the criminal justice system."
Restorative Justice can be used as an alternative to criminal prosecution to allow young people or those who have committed their first offence to change their behaviour without being criminalised, and to repay their victims and the community.
