King's Lynn - Outrage at proposed post office closure

The closure of Lynn's North End post office has been met with outrage in a community which relies on the service it offers to pensioners and vulnerable people.

When the Lynn News visited Loke Road on Wednesday residents willingly discussed their anger at the move, which has left them facing the prospect of using the busy post office counter at Lynn's WH Smith store.

John Richardson (83), who lives just doors away from the post office on Sir Lewis Street, said: "I am a pensioner and use this post office to get my money. Where do I go now to get my pension? I cannot walk very far as I have a bad leg, a taxi will cost at least 5 and I would also have to pay for the bus.

"I think it is stupid. I only live on the next street and there are a lot of old people down here who get their pensions from this post office."

Mr Richardson runs a fruit and vegetable stall on Loke Road with his friend Ben Coulston (86), of Dersingham.

Mr Coulston said: "I use the post office regularly to get my pension. It is a nice shop and the people there are so friendly. I think it is a stupid decision. That post office is for old people, youngsters do not use it. These elderly residents will have nowhere else to go."

Mrs Allison George, of Turbus Road, added: "It is absolutely disgusting. Old people cannot get up to the main post office in town, if you do get there you may have to wait 45 minutes.

"I use this post office three times a week as it is so convenient but there is no way I could get into town three times a week."
