Local lads in TV Oliver! bid
TWO young singing sensations are dreaming of the bright lights of London's West End after enjoying early success in a BBC contest to find a new star for the hit musical Oliver!
Schoolboys Sam Miller and Fraser Davidson beat competition from more than 3,000 hopefuls to be in the final 50 youngsters in I'd Do Anything, a new talent show aimed at filling the roles of Oliver and Nancy for a revival of the famous production.
After progressing from their regional auditions the musical duo performed under the watchful eye of judge Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, when they had to sing and read script from the show.
Viewers can find out if they succeeded tomorrow night, when the show is broadcast to an audience of millions on BBC One.
Sam (12), of North Wootton, is no stranger to performing on stage as he is a member of both Lynn Players and Norfolk Youth Music Theatre.
Proud father Stuart Miller said: "He has thoroughly enjoyed it.
"It was a great experience to be there and meet one of the heroes of theatre.
"To be in the television studios for the day was great."
Sam, a pupil at Lynn's King Edward VII School, has just finished performing in a school production of Bugsy Malone and is now looking forward to starring in Jungle Book, with the Lynn Players, and Pendragen, with Norfolk Youth Music Theatre, later this year.
Fraser (12), of Denver, a pupil at Downham High School, is also actively involved with Norfolk Youth Music Theatre and was surprised to see the familiar face of Sam when he arrived in London for his audition.
Dad Richard Davidson said: "They were very, very sporting about it and wished each other luck.
"I could not believe it when we walked into reception and they saw each other.
"When you think of places like London and Manchester, which have stage schools, it bodes well that two youngsters from West Norfolk have got so far."
Watch Sam and Fraser from 7.05pm on BBC 1 tomorrow (22).
