Lynn dancers are charity's favourite things
MORE than 300 dancers, 450 costume changes, and 1,300 people in the audience adds up to another successful show for the Lynn Academy of Dance – and a bumper £3,000 for the NSPCC Helpline.
The impressive sum was raised from the proceeds of the dance school's 22nd bi-annual show, Favourite Things, which played to sell-out audiences at Lynn Arts Centre earlier this month.
The group, which has been running for more than 40 years, has now raised almost 50,000 for local and national children's charities.
It is the second time the school has chosen to support the NSPCC. It was picked again this year as the school's longest-serving member Rachel Mellor is the charity's local branch representative. She was on hand to receive the donation from the school's founder Miss Karen Waite after the last show on Saturday, December 8.
Favourite Things featured around 30 different routines depicting dancers' favourite things such as Disney World, Christmas and sweets or favourite people such as singers Justin Timberlake and Madonna and actor Johnny Depp.
The dancers, aged from just two to 40-plus, changed into more than 450 sparkling costumes and performed dances including classical and modern ballet, jazz, tap and pop.
The show was directed and choreographed by Miss Waite while her mother Gloria Waite helped design the costumes and wrote a narrative to go with the dances.
There were four sell-out evening performances, and a matine, with each attracting audiences of around 320 people – meaning more than 1,300 came to see the show.
Mrs Waite said they were delighted to have been able to donate so much to the charity.
"The show went really well. We were absolutely delighted with the smooth running of the production and the reaction from the audience."
