Muddy school patch is soaraway success

YOUNGSTERS from Marham Infants' School are celebrating after a barren piece of ground has been transformed into a new garden.

The garden, at the school entrance by the side of the playground, was officially opened when RAF Marham Station Commander Group Captain Phil Osborn cut plant-themed bunting made by the children.

“Originally the area was a dead piece of ground and the school council had ideas to make it more child friendly,” said a school spokesman.

“They wanted an area which had shade in the summer and could provide extra seating for quieter activities such as reading a book, drawing or just having a chat.

“We are delighted to have turned a muddy barren area into an educational resource which promotes emotional well-being.”

With the help of a 2,000 donation from the RAF and 500 raised by Friends of Marham Infants’ School, a raised sensory garden was able to be added to the project.

The plants supplied by Ward’s Nursery are scented or have interesting shapes and textures. In addition all the children have planted a bulb in the garden.

The spokesman added: “We also had a visiting artist, Peter Sek, who worked with Year 2 children. Together they made a colourful sculpture for the garden by recycling and painting milk tins provided by some of our mums.”

Gp Capt Osborn was invited to the school both to open the garden and celebrate its two-year period of playgroup spaces being improved.
