New £6.5m South Lynn school a real class act
PLANS for a new £6.5 million "green" primary school and children's centre in South Lynn have been submitted by Norfolk County Council.
The building, a replacement for the current St Michael's school, includes proposals for solar panels and will be energy-efficient.
"The state-of-the-art building will be a real inspiration to pupils and teachers and will provide children with a thoroughly stimulating learning environment.
"The school and children's centre will benefit many generations of children and families to come," said Rosalie Monbiot, county cabinet member for children's services.
If planning permission is granted work will begin on site next autumn with a scheduled opening for January 2010.
The new building, on the site of the current Puny Drain, will have rooms and sports facilities available for community use along with a football pitch provided by West Norfolk Council.
The new school is part of the massive redevelopment of South Lynn and is designed to accommodate current pupils at the Saddlebow Road school and new families arriving into the area.
Cllr Nick Daubney, leader of West Norfolk Council, said: "The new primary school is a vitally-important and integral part of the community facilities which are being provided as part of the Nar Ouse Regeneration (NORA) programme.
"Its location on land which is being reclaimed through the filling of the Puny Drain means that the new school will be located in the heart of the South Lynn community."
