New homes plan for Snettisham site

PLANS to build 26 new homes on the site of the former Sue Ryder Care Centre at Snettisham have been submitted to West Norfolk Council.

An Essex-based company, KSPG Properties Ltd, is seeking full planning permission and listed-building consent for the development, which will include sub-dividing the old hall to form 11 self-contained apartments and building 11 new homes.

The site, on the corner of Lynn Road and Church Road, has stood empty since the Sue Ryder Care Centre closed in the summer of 2006. The Grade II*-listed hall had been under threat of closure since November, 2005, when it celebrated its 25th birthday.

The planning application shows no new access is planned or alteration to the existing access, but some tree felling would be needed.

Permission to demolish the conservatory and single-storey residential wing on the south side of the courtyard is sought, with four houses built to replace it.

The coach house would be converted into two separate dwellings, each with a ground and first floor. The stables would also be converted, and extended, to form one home with a ground and first floor and a separate cottage.

Construction of two detached houses and a terrace of five cottages, on the east side of the site, with an internal access road, makes up the remainder of the development.

Developer's agent, Mrs Yvonne Miller, from Scott and Jaques in Chelmsford, said: "It will provide a lot of housing of different sizes and to suit different pockets, which should be really helpful. The accommodation will be from one end of the scale to the other."

She said it was rare to get such good quality accommodation with a lot of amenity land that could be used by the new residents and their families, and the borough council had been "very helpful from day one".
