Record bus service to coast extended

A HUGE increase in passenger numbers has led to the Norfolk CoastHopper's summer time-table being extended to the end of the month.

Run for Norfolk County Council by Norfolk Green, the CoastHopper service has seen a 75 per cent increase in passenger numbers compared with the same period in 2007 – which was itself a record year.

The CoastHopper runs from Lynn to Cromer via Hunstanton, Wells and Sheringham and from April to June 2008 carried 72,000 passengers.

To meet increased demand the service now runs every half hour between Sheringham and Hunstanton, and is now served by six low-floor easy access buses. The summer timetable will now run to September 28.

Norfolk County Council's cabinet member for planning and transportation Adrian Gunson said: "This is a terrific public transport success story. Some of the increase is because free travel is available to many older visitors, but that's by no means the whole story.

"We have seen strong growth in fare-paying passengers. The service is frequent and reliable, and very popular with visitors and local people.

"We have received lots of comments about the helpfulness of the drivers and I am very glad that Norfolk Green was recently awarded a further contract to run the CoastHopper until March 2013."

The CoastHopper is part of Norfolk County Council's strategy to help people enjoy the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty along the north coast while minimising damage to the environment.
