Row as all Labour's nominations for honorary aldermen are axed
A ROW over who will be awarded the prestigious office of honorary alderman in West Norfolk was due to be decided yesterday.
Labour party members wanted the title for four of its former councillors, but West Norfolk Council’s cabinet decided that was too many and cut all the party’s nominations from its official recommendations to the full council.
The council was due to be asked to bestow the honour on Conservative nominations Julyan Ansell and Carol Sharp and Liberal Democrat nomination Paul Brandon. The Labour group had nominated Ted Benefer, Alan and Brenda Burch and Lawrence Wilkinson.
During the cabinet debate over nominations it was concluded that the Labour group should try to reduce its nominations in time for the full council meeting to allow some of them to be included in the recommendations.
The office of honorary alderman is recognition of eminent services rendered to the council.
