Shock death of Lynn karaoke star
EMOTIONAL tributes are being paid this week following the shock death of the hugely popular karaoke star Nigel Hewitt.
Mr Hewitt, who performed as Nobby's Karaoke in venues across Lynn, was found dead on Friday after he failed to attend his regular booking at the town's Dr Thirsty's pub the evening before.
It is believed that Mr Hewitt, of Elvington, on Springwood Estate, Gaywood, hanged himself.
Around 200 people have already joined an online tribute to the performer at the social network site Facebook, while former colleagues paid their respects this week.
Dr Thirsty's manager Dan Horsepool worked alongside Mr Hewitt for eight years and said he was an immensely popular figure in the town.
He told the Lynn News: "All the staff will miss him a great deal, Thursday nights will never be the same again.
"Thursday night was Nobby's Karaoke. He was supposed to be here on Thursday and when he did not turn up, we knew something was wrong.
"He was always up for a good time and he always got on with anyone he met."
Mr Hewitt performed regularly at Dr Thirsty's on Thursday nights, often to packed audiences.
Among those paying tribute on Facebook is Jemma Yardy, who said: "Nobby made Dr Thirsty's worth going to on a Thursday. He was such a nice bloke, liked everyone and never said a bad word about no-one. You will be missed loads."
Amy Conyard added: "A brilliant person, absolute top bloke. Greatly missed, Thursday's will never be the same."
The Facebook tribute was created by doorman Malcolm Baker, of Lynn, who regularly worked at Dr Thirsty's on Nobby's Karaoke night.
He said: "He single-handedly turned it around on a Thursday night. It was the busiest place in town.
"He had a very big following and there was just something about karaoke with Nobby, he just filled the place.
"If there was someone who wanted to sing, or do a duet, he would always get up and sing. It was a job he was very good at and I am sure he really enjoyed it as well.
"It has been such a big shock. He was extremely well known and well-liked, he will be greatly missed."
Mr Hewitt was an electrician at Lynn's Queen Elizabeth Hospital during the 1990s and is still fondly remembered by staff.
Maintenance team leader Bob Walker said: "He was a very good electrician and a hard worker.
"While he was here he started up his karaoke business and became hugely successful at it, sometimes working up to seven nights a week, but that was typical of him.
"We were all shocked and deeply saddened to hear of his death. He was a real character."
