Skate treat is icing on cake for WN guides

SIXTY guides from Fairstead, Gaywood and Reffley got their skates on to enjoy West Norfolk's latest winter attraction.

Four also had the memorable experience of receiving their Baden-Powell Challenge awards on ice at the Norfolk Christmas Family Festival at Sandringham.

The awards were presented to Fairstead guides Sarah-Jane Burns, Heidi Wheeler, Vickie Roberts and Aimee-Louise Paddock by the Assistant County Commissioner, Pat Pinnington. Paula Everett also gained the award but was unable to attend the skating evening.

The ice rink brought back memories for three of the five who went to Switzerland to complete the adventure section of their Baden-Powell award, the highest a guide can achieve.

Mrs Pinnington said: "They went skating while they were in Switzerland and enjoyed revisiting the experience."

The two other girls attended the Norjam international scout jamboree near Norwich.

Fairstead guider Mrs Caroline Bush said the five had to complete other challenges, including organising a patrol cooking competition based on television's Ready, Steady, Cook. They also led summer camp sporting activities and a visit to Lynn Museum followed by a town walk.

The skating trip was organised by Reffley guider Mrs Melanie Carter who said it was also a special occasion for five young guides from the three units who were enrolled during the evening.

"It was really nice. There was a lovely atmosphere there," she added.

The ice rink is open until Sunday, January 6.
