Snowman 'scum' slammed at Gaywood

A GAYWOOD couple have hit out at the "scum" who stole an illuminated snowman from their garden within hours of it being put on display.

The 3ft tall festive figure had a special place in the annual light display staged by Steve and Lorraine Kelly, of 9 Thurlin Road.

The blowmould model was put out last Monday and is believed to have been taken about 9.10pm when Mrs Kelly (43), heard the garden gate slam.

She said: "They just snipped through the cable. I hope they feel very proud of themselves.

"It's just a shame it wasn't switched on at the time. It would have given them the shock of their life.

"It's supposed to be the season of goodwill to all men but that does not stretch to scum like them."

The couple have been decorating their garden for Christmas for about ten years and have built up a large display of lights and illuminated figures.

Nothing has ever been stolen before and they are now making sure the rest of their decorations are as secure as possible.

Mrs Kelly said: "I'm really, really upset because we bought the snowman about six years ago and you can't get ones like that any more.

"We put it out every year in the same place. Now it's just a big empty space."

The couple enjoy looking at the lights themselves and they are also popular with nearby residents, especially children.

"They love to stand outside and look," said Mrs Kelly.

Mr Kelly (46), considered taking the display down.

Mrs Kelly said: "When something like this happens it spoils it and you think: 'What's the point?' "

But she added: "If you take the decorations down, they think they have won."
