West Raynham RAF site to be eco-village?

AMBITIOUS plans for a major overhaul of the former RAF base at West Raynham were submitted last week in a move which could see the dormant site transformed into an eco-village.

Developer Roger Gawn is hoping to build 58 new homes at the former base on Massingham Road as part of a host of planning applications submitted to North Norfolk Council.

The scheme also includes plans to convert four hangars into loft-style holiday apartments and a change-of-use application for former MoD buildings which will be used as a community centre, crche, health care clinic, aviation museum and church.

Further MoD buildings have been earmarked for a squash court, gymnasium and tennis courts while plans have also been included for a mix of single-storey and two-storey dwellings for the Flagship Housing Group.

Mr Gawn, director of Tamarix Investments, based at Melton Park in Melton Constable, bought the site in October when he announced his visions of creating an eco-village.

The deal included 172 houses, together with four large aircraft hangars and several hundred thousand square feet of ancillary buildings including workshops and sports, health and catering facilities.

Speaking to the Lynn News in October, he said: "Our aim is to build on this and create an environment which is self-sustainable, eco-friendly and has good leisure and business facilities."

Mr Gawn has been involved in a number of high-profile restoration projects in Norfolk, including work on Lynn's Custom House. He also owns Purfleet House in Lynn, where Lynn Civic Society members protested recently about a lack of activity at the deserted building and at its run-down and boarded-up condition.
