Build a new Lynn bridge, road - or both

A BURNING lorry brought Lynn to a standstill as effectively as a missile attack on Tuesday.

Mile upon mile of traffic ground to a halt in all directions as the lorry loaded with prawns burned to a crisp shell.

This demonstration of how effectively the road network can become gridlocked has not escaped notice, with one prominent transport boss calling for solutions.

As managing director of Norfolk Green, Ben Colson, pointed out, it doesn't take a lorry fire to clog things up. A rainy day will do it almost as effectively.

He called for "bold and long-term decisions" so here's one for starters: a new bridge over the river, somewhere opposite Boal Quay, bringing traffic into the town centre avoiding all the known bottlenecks.

I appreciate that would be expensive, so how about using an existing bridge, the Cut Bridge, and building a new road alongside the river, avoiding South Lynn and London Road and joining up with South Quay?

As "bold and long-term decisions" go there must be some merit in this.

l Nelson's last words are rumoured to have been "Kiss me, Hardy". He very probably did say this, but as England's greatest hero, and with Lady Hamilton waiting at home, I remain confident that he didn't mean it in THAT way. Way back then, platonic kisses between men at times of great emotion were not unusual, or at all suspect.

But today our masculinity is under attack from all sides. Last week my "meal deal" sandwiches from Boots contained a "hidden" leaflet urging me to shop there for "men's fragrances" and other such traditionally ladies' skincare products.

Today I was offered a free men's "fragrance" sample card. My polite refusal was met with an incredulous "No! It's free".

Men – water, soap, toothpaste... that's all you need. And do the washing up now and then!
