Ruby Tuesday - Who cares about Milton Keynes?
Ruby’s displeasure with Lynn people receiving “local” news from Hull, as expressed last week, clearly struck a chord.
Brian Baylis, now of Wimbotsham, writes: “I had to laugh when I read the end of your column today and about people in Lynn getting news items from Hull, as I did when I lived in Lynn.
“ Now we very rarely get news from round here, or even Norfolk, except for the visit to the hospital by the Queen. We get Milton Keynes, Northampton and Luton most of the time, both on BBC and Anglia.”
Sounds like it could be a case of being careful what you wish for.
Being a responsible, law-abiding citizen, Ruby naturally has no tolerance for the graffiti she occasionally sees littering up Lynn as she goes about her business, but the daubing of the word “Hiya” in large black letters on the wall of Boots just opposite the Lynn News office seemed to be even more pointless than usual.
Now it’s time for another one from the “You Couldn’t Make It Up” department courtesy of reader Malcolm Cox.
He writes: “Here’s another gem for you. Local pig farmers angry at EU welfare regulations continually being ignored are being championed by MP Mr Jim Bacon.” Ruby is quite sure Mr Bacon will make sure the powers that be are suitably grilled.
Ruby’s colleagues from newsdesk and the photographic department were warmy welcomed at the Springwood High School opportunities fair last Thursday, though one of the students did raise a laugh back in the office.
After the news editor had answered the boy’s question about journalists’ pay, he replied: “I was looking for more” and moved away. Well, at least he was honest.
Ruby is quite sure that we all have tales of woe relating to the self-service tills found in most supermarkets these days, but she wondered where her brother’s mind was when he made to leave the till he was using in Sainsbury’s near the Lynn bus station the other day before he’d paid for his lunch. It was only the “Select payment type” command of the automated voice that brought him back to reality from wherever he was in his mind.
In compiling the weekly list of planning applications around the area which you can see in the Lynn News on Friday, Ruby’s colleague couldnt’t help smiling at the address of one proposal in Great Massingham – Tipsy House, Drunken Drove.
It sounds to Ruby like a venue for some very good parties.
