As I start the column this week my blood pressure is a little higher than usual, having just come away from the opening of the Mart in Lynn. This does not really matter as I am pleased to report The Mart is as exciting as ever and will continue to appeal to both the young and the young at heart, whether enjoying a ride or eating the delicious candy flosses and other delicacies. Rock on!

Time again for another of our occasional special columns and this time it’s a real pleasure to feature the popular West Norfolk entertainer, linguist and fundraiser – John Harris. It is a very appropriate time to interview John as The Mart has nearly arrived (he is a regular supporter) and it is Diamond Jubilee year, this being the 60th Anniversary of the Accession to the Throne of Her Majesty The Queen. John is very much a royalist and royal correspondent also.

It seems appropriate that in the week the DVD of the highly successful recent movie Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy appears, readers will be able to view the film on a larger screen at their local village hall. Tinker, Tailor (15) will be screened at North Creake on Tuesday, February 14 and at Watlington Village Hall on February 18 at 7.30pm. The film, superbly reviewed, stars Gary Oldman, as George Smiley, Colin Firth and John Hurt. I have long admired these actors especially John Hurt, who does visit Lynn occasionally; his tremendous portrayal of the unhinged Emperor Caligula in the BBC series I Claudius helped to develop a great interest and love of the ancient world in me. He will receive a special BAFTA award for outstanding British contributions to the film industry later this month. At Thornham Drill Hall the Woody Allen film Midnight in Paris will be screened on February 22. These filmic events are held in partnership with Creative Arts East and Village Screen Cinema. At last I can wish you all A Happy Chinese New Year (unfortunately not in Chinese) but the thought was there! It is now officially The Year of the Dragon (sounds very dramatic) and it was great being able to spend time last weekend among the local Chinese community celebrating with them and enjoying their company, cuisine and traditional customs and entertainment. We always enjoy seeing and hearing the fire crackers heralding the famous lion and dragon dance and watching examples of martial arts. This year we also viewed a fashion catwalk and heard Mandarin class students singing a special New Year song. A special Tai Chi display was also presented to an appreciative audience. Thanks also for a raffle and gifts for all. Our borough mayor, Colin Sampson and the mayoress attended – so a big “thank-you” to the West Norfolk Chinese Association for an amazing time. The main hall at KES made a fine venue. For details about the Association contact Kwai Li on: 07976219509.
