That’s Entertainment

It seems appropriate that in the week the DVD of the highly successful recent movie Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy appears, readers will be able to view the film on a larger screen at their local village hall. Tinker, Tailor (15) will be screened at North Creake on Tuesday, February 14 and at Watlington Village Hall on February 18 at 7.30pm. The film, superbly reviewed, stars Gary Oldman, as George Smiley, Colin Firth and John Hurt. I have long admired these actors especially John Hurt, who does visit Lynn occasionally; his tremendous portrayal of the unhinged Emperor Caligula in the BBC series I Claudius helped to develop a great interest and love of the ancient world in me. He will receive a special BAFTA award for outstanding British contributions to the film industry later this month. At Thornham Drill Hall the Woody Allen film Midnight in Paris will be screened on February 22. These filmic events are held in partnership with Creative Arts East and Village Screen Cinema. If you would like to make some movies as well as watch them and are between the ages of 13 and 19 get in touch with Stuart Hall on 01553 775001 or 0776 6368993. You would have to join the Lynn Museum’s new Youth Forum which is being launched tomorrow, February 4, between 11am and noon. The forum will give young people the chance to gain valuable experience and life skills through joining in a wide range of museum-based projects. The kids seem to have all the fun these days, sounds great!

Now a chance to enjoy some cool music and help support a worthy community event. Lynn band, Evolution will be playing on February 11, along with DJ Foxy and DIDZ, to help raise funds for a headstone for the grave of tragic teenager Ashley Russell who was found hanged at his home in Woodwark Avenue, North Lynn in October. Contact The Discovery Centre, North Lynn, for tickets which are £5. The gig is held between 7 and 11.30pm.

BY the way, if you are interested in some jam sessions they are being held on the second Thursday of each month at The Live and Let Live pub, Windsor Road, Lynn. Ask at the bar for details.

Music of, presumably, a more reflective kind, seems to be being performed at St. John’s Church, Lynn on both Wednesday, February, 15 at 7.30pm and March 21 also a Wednesday evening at the same time. These are Church Organ Club Concerts. The recitals seem ideal for those who enjoy organ music especially.

The Gin Trap Inn at Ringstead on the High Street is holding a series of acoustic sessions throughout the year and the next one is scheduled for Tuesday, February 28 between 7.45 and 10.30pm. All instruments, styles and the spoken word are welcomed and there is a sing-around format in a friendly atmosphere. Contact Adrian Tebbutt on 01553 631697 for details.

For those interested in, and concerned about, our marine environment, The Green Quay Centre at the South Quay, in Lynn is holding two non-political events. One, on Flooding and Coastal Erosion planning is taking place next Friday, February 10 between 2 and 5pm and includes presentations and a workshop. Officials and Henry Bellingham, MP will be present. The other event, which is at the same venue, this time on February 14, 11am to 3pm, concerns the planning of future activities in our local marine area by the Marine Management Organisation. Your views are welcomed, so why not come along to these interesting and important events and see if you can make a difference?

The list of future events at The Brancaster Millennium Activity Centre is really impressive but I should like to highlight one artistic weekend coming up between Friday, February 17 and Sunday, February 19. Bob Larking M.A. the centre’s specialist artist and tutor will explore the mysteries of traditional Indian ink pen drawings. All things fishing and coastal will provide real-life subjects. For details both residential and non-residential contact Alex Green on 01485 210719. This Pen on the Wash Art Workshop is suitable for all abilities.

A REMINDER that the free lunchtime talks at True’s Yard Museum in Lynn continue next Thursday with Dr Clive Bond talking about The Origins of Lynn. The talks, which are free, also include Edith Reeves on February 16 talking about The Darker side of Lynn and Father Peter Rollings on February 22 talking about Medieval Pilgrimage and Lynn.
