That’s Entertainment
As I start the column this week my blood pressure is a little higher than usual, having just come away from the opening of the Mart in Lynn. This does not really matter as I am pleased to report The Mart is as exciting as ever and will continue to appeal to both the young and the young at heart, whether enjoying a ride or eating the delicious candy flosses and other delicacies. Rock on!
WeLL, the movie The Artist walked away with several Bafta awards on Sunday while that other successful film Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy also did well. The good news is, by the time you come to read this, The Artist should be on general release and Tinker, Tailor will be shown in another Village Screen Cinema, this time at The Amy Robsart Hall, Syderstone on Saturday, March 17, at 7.30pm. In April (on the 21st) the movie One Day based on that best-selling book, which could be described as a dramatic romantic comedy, will also be shown. Tickets are £3.50 (advance booking) or £4 at the door. Contact (01485) 578588 or 578171 for further details.
One of the exciting annual events held in Lynn coming soon is the 24th King’s Lynn Fiction Festival. Two Booker prize-listed authors, as well as Richard and Judy’s 2012 Book Club choice, are among the line-up at this year’s festival at Lynn Town Hall running from March 9-11. There is a bookstall and licensed bar on all three days. A special feature is the opportunity to have lunch with the writers in local restaurants on both Saturday and Sunday. For details see www.lynnlitfests.com
In coming to the musical part of the column this week I have to record a matter of some sadness. The next recital introduced and played by Gerald Gifford on the harpsichord at The King’s Lynn Music Society will be in memory of the late Muriel Brindle the society’s secretary. Gerald Gifford is an accomplished organ and harpsichord player who has broadcast frequently and recorded many albums to widespread critical acclaim. Gerald is also Honorary Keeper of Music at The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge and teaches part time at the Music Faculty in the same city. The recital is being held on the evening of Wednesday, February 29, at 7.30pm. Coffee is available from 7pm and, as usual, the concert is held at the Trinity Guildhall (Town Hall), Saturday, Market Place, Lynn.
As regular readers will know I am always encouraging people to attend events at The Green Quay Centre and True’s Yard Museum. The quality and abundance of events on offer is enormous and this week I should like to recommend The North End Then and Now Exhibition, on show in March and April this year at True’s Yard. Photographs of yesterday and today showing how the North End has changed over 100 years should prove to be a fascinating experience and North Enders visiting the museum to share their memories of the streets and people of the area would be most welcome. This opens on March 2. There will also be a guided walk on March 7 10.30-12.30 and with a ticket price of £4 per person including the museum entrance, exhibition and a possible visit to St. Nicholas Chapel, I smell a bargain! The new season of North End guided walks begins in May.
