The Big Eye - It’s win-win for lawyers

As a rule, in any battle or struggle in life there are winners and losers, and being the competitive creatures that we are we want to be on the side of the victors.

Obviously this is a foolish hope because someone has to be defeated and however hard we try there will be times when we simply can’t win. But there is within our ranks a group who never lose, a group who always benefit from any dispute and always come up trumps in any wrangle. Our lawyers.

Since the dawn of civilisation there has been one group of people who’ve made laws and rules and statutes and another group who seek to breach those rules or find the loopholes in them and slap bang in the middle you’ll always find lawyers. As governments seek to shackle us with more and more laws and the culture of blaming and claiming for damages grows year by year, the lawyers wriggle their way between us all picking the meat off the bones of any argument and promising the earth to their clients.

They don’t even profess to be on the side of truth and justice and many will happily defend anyone from Dr Mengele to petty shoplifters... for a fee! Everything we do from birth to death will be of interest to the legal profession and they’ll draw up a document to constrain, contain or exclude anything you want them to provided it’s within the law.

In your presence they’ll talk earnestly to you about the pitfalls and risks you take and the reasons why you should take legal advice regarding your property and the moment you leave the office they’ll be siding with another who’s looking to do someone over, legally speaking!

Once we’d adjusted to the initial shock of Savile’s forays into the gutter it wasn’t long before his victims were seeking redress from his estate and who’s to be found crawling in the gutter alongside this disgusting man? Lawyers! They’re crawling over this pit of misery like there’s no tomorrow but I guess if the £millions weren’t there to be had they’d be as silent as the grave. It isn’t just the victims they’re latching on to on this occasion, you can bet some extortionate fees are being ramped up as other “celebrities” call their own solicitors after being arrested on suspicion of being involved.

It would be pointless to dream of a better simpler world where this confrontational and expensive system was abolished.

It’ll never happen. The system feeds itself like a tapeworm and every time there’s another pavement tripping or coffee scorching in the paper we look at the payouts and we think we’d like some of that for ourselves.

It isn’t all trivial and minor swindling though... last week it was revealed that claims against the NHS for negligence in maternity care would amount to £3.1 BILLION and within those figures it was stated that lawyers would pocket up to 20 per cent of it in fees.

Seems a lot doesn’t it? I’m not sure I’d feel much of a winner or sleep easy in my holiday cottage in the Cotswolds knowing it was paid for out of some badly injured little baby’s financial lifeline... or Savile’s filthy money.
