To Be Frank - With kisses on the bottom

Well it fair warms the cockles of the old heart, it does. And not only because when they say peace on earth and goodwill to all men, I never actually thought it included me!

But people can surprise you in the nicest of ways sometimes, and I have to tell you it truly was a lovely surprise to find that a reader of my column had sent me a little Christmas present.

I have a running joke in this column, along the lines of: “I’d like to wish all of my readers a Happy New Year – both of them.”

And the sender of this gift duly added a note: “There you are ... that makes at least three of us!”

How sweet! And if it keeps on like this, meetings of the Frank Edmonds Appreciation Society may have to be held in something other than a telephone kiosk!

Tragically, though, the present was anonymous ... although somehow this only makes it all the more tantalising.

Now, there was a kiss on the bottom of the note, and naturally, this had me jumping to the assumption that it was from a lady.

Of course, in this day and age one simply has to be broadminded. So if a bloke wants to send me an anonymous gift, and put a kiss on the bottom of the note, well hey, that’s cool too!

But this definitely looks like female handwriting to me ... so that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it!

I did used to be a journalist it’s true, but my contacts were never quite good enough, or my favour calling – in strong enough, to arrange for the note to be DNA-tested – so we’ll just have to leave it at that.

The gift was chocolates, and from one of the nicer brands of High Street retailer, too – so clearly good taste was at work. In fact, I’m munching my way through them as we speak. Purely for research purposes, and for inspiration in writing this piece, you understand. Mmm!

Talking of inspiration, I was thinking of writing my next column on the wholesale devouring of extremely large cakes, if anyone’s ... No? Oh well, it was worth a shot.

Seriously though, to my anonymous fan (“secret admirer” sounds a bit strong, really, so I think I’ll call you Ms Anon), I thank you from the bottom of my stomach. Heart! Sorry! I meant to say heart!

Thank you very much, anyway. You’re very kind – and it does fair restore your faith in human nature, in these somewhat trying times we’re living through.

I’ve already said before in these august pages – well, this column, at any rate – how much nicer it would be if people took the trouble to smile a bit more.

And wouldn’t it be nice if people took the trouble to be kinder to each other?

I’m not necessarily suggesting that everyone has to start going around giving chocolates to people – although speaking as one grateful recipient, I’m here to tell you that it certainly is extremely welcome.

No, just try to do a simple kindness every now and then. I’m not saying make it a New Year’s Resolution, because that would only be broken by next Thursday.

But just see what you can do. It’ll warm the cockles of someone’s heart.
