John Howell played his cards right when he met his future wife, Catherine, at a whist drive.
The couple went on to marry at Burnham Market Church on Mrs Howell’s 21st birthday and have just celebrated their diamond wedding.
They made their home in Docking where Mr Howell, 83, was born and worked as a tractor driver. Mrs Howell trained as a nursemaid and worked as a nanny. They have five children, 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. “Number 10 and number 11 are on the way,” said Mrs Howell.
A family meal is planned to celebrate their anniversary and the couple hosted a party at their home in Bradmere Lane on the day.
Their secret for a happy marriage is “forgive and forget and carry on.” Mrs Howell enjoys reading, knitting and watching television. Mr Howell is a sports enthusiast and takes a special interest in cricket, football and horse racing.
