Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service has begun a recruitment drive for about 15 more part-time firefighters to fill vacancies at West Norfolk stations.
Up to four new retained firefighters are needed at Outwell and West Walton and smaller numbers at Fakenham, Great Massingham, Heacham, Hunstanton, Sandringham and Terrington St Clement.
Station Manager Tim Edwards, from Lynn Fire Station, said: “One or two stations are not as available as we would like them to be. We need a minimum of four retained firefighters to turn a fire appliance out and we have to have a driver and someone in charge of that appliance.”
Part-time trainee firefighters are paid a retainer of £2,137 a year plus an hourly rate of £9.76 while on duty. They do a probationary period of about two years and on becoming a fully retained firefighter the retainer rises to £2,848 and the hourly rate to £13.
Mr Edwards said recruits have to meet several conditions, including living or working within five minutes’ reach of the fire station, being in good physical shape, attending an interview, passing a written test and having permission from their employer to go on turnouts at short notice.
They must also give a three-hour commitment each week to training in the evenings at their local station.
