Poor weather could have dealt a death blow to the 19th Creakes Gardeners’ Club Horticultural Show. But gardeners are made of sterner stuff.
“We are down on exhibitors this year but slightly up on the number of entries,” said show secretary Alan Crisp.
“We had a total of 232 entries as against 213 last year.”
It seemed that weather that was bad for some was good for others.
“Entries in the vegetable section were considerably up,” he said, showing that plentiful rain was good news for things like cabbages, Brussels Sprouts and potatoes.
“Flowers were about the same but fruit entries were less than half compared with last year.”
The show’s top performers were Jane Faire and Alan Crisp who won the Everett Cup as joint overall points winners. Last year there was also a tie for this cup between Glynis Clack and Ian Hudson.
But although losing out this year Mrs Clack managed to go one better in the All Exhibitors Cup section for vegetables and salads. Last year she shared it with Brenda Cooper and Ian Hudson.
This year she won it outright.
The event also welcomed John Green as its new chairman as the previous chairman, Peter Phillips, had left the village.
The 14 trophies were presented by the president, Jean Richards.
