A MURDER investigation has been launched after the body of a woman was found in woodland on the Sandringham estate.

Police have cordoned off a farm track off King’s Avenue, Anmer, after a dog walker discovered the remains in a copse on Sunday afternoon.

Det Chief Insp Jes Fry, who is leading the investigation, said today: “I think the circumstances indicate that she is probably the victim of a murder.

“The body has been in situ for some time and the experts are here to try to establish what that time frame is.”

The remains were found in a row of trees just 100 metres from the quiet country road, which runs between Sandringham and Anmer.

A man was walking his dog in the wooded area at around 4pm on New Year’s Day when he discovered the body.

The copse of trees is a mile away from Sandringham House and a few hundred metres away from the Royal Stud, which is also off King’s Avenue.

The body has now been removed from the site and taken to Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital where a post mortem will be carried out.

A team of scientists have been searching the scene, while detectives will examime cold cases for any possible links.

But Mr Fry would not reveal if the body had been buried or how the victim was clothed.

He said: “The only people who know are my staff, the person who found her and the person responsible for putting her there.”

A team of seven police officers have been guarding the isolated scene, while forensic experts have also been on the site, together with an anthropologist and entomologist, who studies insects.

Mr Fry said: “They will be collecting samples of soil, fauna and anything found in the vicinity of the victim to then analyse and see what we can establish.”

He said that the police investigation will be looking at cold cases and missing people reports.

He could not rule out missing Wisbech teenager Alisa Dmitrijeva, who was last seen in Friar’s Street, Lynn, on August 31.

Mr Fry said: “We will focus at the moment on missing people and prioritise those missing closer to here and then work our way out.”
