POLICE are appealing for witnesses after an armed robbery in Lynn this morning.

The attack happened at Francis Wain jewellers in Norfolk Street after three men, at least one armed with a sledgehammer, jumped out of a silver Mercedes people carrier.

It is understood an elderly woman was being treated by medics after being knocked to the ground by the gang who used smoke to confuse CCTV.

A window at the jewellers was smashed before the gang grabbed various items and left. It is thought shutters at the shop then closed automatically.

It is thought firearms of some description were seen with the gang, the raid happening at 9.50am.

Eye witnesses have remarked on the speed of the people carrier before the smoke was released.

The gang then drove off towards the Lidl direction, turning up Chapel Street at “break-neck” speed.

One reported seeing the van leave the scene at speed before turning down Chapel Street. He also saw smoke coming from the passenger side of the vehicle.

He said: “When the van came down the street, it didn’t swerve to avoid people. People were moving to avoid it. He obviously didn’t care who was in the way. It was quite frightening really.”

The whole raid only lasted a matter of minutes.

Police want witnesses to contact them on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
