“I’m better off in jail, thanks”

AN ALCOHOLIC shoplifter asked to be kept in prison where he said he was finally getting help.

Jamie Lucas, 37, admitted two counts of shoplifting while subject to a suspended sentence order for a previous similar offence, at West Norfolk Magistrates, in Lynn, on Wednesday.

Ian Graham, mitigating, said Lucas was a former drug addict and battling alcoholic and after four days on remand in prison had requested not to have the intervention of probation to seek a community sentence.

He said: “Having been remanded in custody he is far more positive than he has been in the community.”

Lucas, of Coulton Close, North Lynn, was sentenced to a total of 38 days in prison.

He was given 10 days for stealing £71 of meat from Morrisons, Lynn, on January 27 and the 28-day suspended sentence invoked. There was no separate penalty for theft of four cans of lager from Iceland, Lynn, on January 7.
