KING’S LYNN: CCTV triggered steak thief’s confession

A man stole more than £70 worth of steak while on licence from prison because he was homeless, magistrates heard.

Ricky Bridges was caught on CCTV camera stealing the meat from Marks and Spencers in High Street, Lynn.

The 35-year-old, who is now living in Merchants Terrace, London Road, Lynn, appeared before Lynn magistrates on Friday and admitted committing the theft on February 9.

Prosecutor Gwen Wallace said Bridges was known to police, and was seen by an officer carrying a large shopping bag full of items.

She said: “He wanted to speak with him but was distracted by another matter, but then received a call about a theft and put two and two together.

“CCTV was observed and it was clear Bridges was the person loading the shopping bag.”

In a police interview, Bridges refused to admit the offences until he had seen the CCTV.

He then said he stole the meat as he was homeless, telling officers he ate half of it and sold the rest for £10.

The court heard Bridges was released from prison for drugs offences in September 2011, and has received a warning for breaching the licence.

In mitigation, Ruth Johnson said Bridges found being homeless particularly difficult, but was now much more stable.

Bridges was sentenced to an 18-month conditional discharge. He was also ordered to pay £72.32 compensation and £15 costs.
