King’s Lynn: Employee stole goods and sold them on eBay
An employee was caught out after taking hundreds of pounds worth of equipment from work and selling it on over a period of months.
Family man Paul Crake, 43, was trying to pay off large debts and was desperate to supplement his income, West Norfolk Magistrates’ Court, in Lynn, heard on Wednesday.
Richard Paterson, prosecuting, said a store supervisor at Pinguin Foods, in the town, where Crake worked, had become suspicious and discovered boots, knee pads, gloves and chargers for sale on internet trading site eBay for a total of £710.
Giles Debenham, mitigating, said: “It is no exaggeration to say he and his wife are utterly mortified at the circumstances that he finds himself in today.
“Mr Crake is in that category of defendant that the mere fact of his appearance before this court, the consequential conviction and loss of his good character, is a very significant penalty in itself.”
Mr Debenham said Crake’s family debt had become difficult to manage when his wife had to give up work.
Crake, of Weedon Way, Fairstead, Lynn, admitted theft from his employers between March and November last year.
He was ordered to pay £660 compensation, £15 to a national victims of crime fund and given a 12-month conditional discharge.
