KING’S LYNN: Former fisherman jailed after stealing to buy drugs
A drug addict with 69 convictions of theft will spend his 30th birthday behind bars after running out of chances.
Lynn magistrates told Sam Sandish they were jailing him with a “heavy heart” as the court and probation service had done everything it could to help him, but had run out of options.
Sandish, 29, of Merchants Terrace, London Road, Lynn, appeared before court on Friday and admitted stealing 17 packs of steak from Marks and Spencers in Lynn on February 20.
He also admitted that the offence put him in breach of a suspended prison sentence imposed for theft last year.
He was jailed for six weeks for the breach and two weeks for the theft, to run consecutively.
Prosecutor, Yvonne Neill, said Sandish was caught for the latest offence after police recognised him from CCTV footage at Marks and Spencer.
In mitigation, Neil Meacham said it was a “sad day” for the former fisherman, who resorted to stealing to fund his drug habit.
Presiding magistrate Jennifer Kelly told Sandish: “I am disappointed in you. A lot of people in this court want to see you grow up and address this, but you are making it difficult to get back into society. It is with a heavy heart that we have to send you to prison.”
