KING’S LYNN: Shoplifter sought help after stealing
A Lynn man who voluntarily sought help from his GP after being caught shoplifting made a good impression on West Norfolk magistrates on Wednesday.
Wayne Binstead, 45, of London Road, was fined £100 and ordered to pay a £20 victim surcharge after he admitted stealing groceries and items, worth a total of £159.29, from the Tesco store, off Hardwick Road, Lynn, on February 5.
Yvonne Neill, prosecuting, said Binstead was seen to hesitate before leaving the store with a trolley full of groceries without paying for them. He was stopped outside and all the stolen items were recovered.
In mitigation, solicitor Ruth Johnson said it was “a moment of stupidity” when the defendant stole in Tesco and he made a full admission to police.
He then went to see his GP and underwent assessment and tests. His doctor concluded that he was suffering from severe depression and prescribed him anti-depressants.
Miss Johnson said Binstead also went to Lynn’s Purfleet Trust, which supports local homeless people and those with other problems, and was helped to find accommodation.
He was now considered eligible for employment support allowance and housing benefit.
The magistrates said they had taken heart that Binstead took it upon himself to get this help voluntarily.
