Magistrate slams crime ‘lifestyle’
A MAN accused of viewing thieving as a lifestyle choice was given a last chance to turn things around, at West Norfolk Magistrates’ Court.
Barry Garside-Neville, 27, admitted three counts of shoplifting, one of handling stolen goods and three of possession of drugs.
William Hush, chairman of the magistrates’ bench, said: “We are concerned you seem to think thieving is alright – it is a lifestyle choice you can make.
“We are going to give you a chance to make something of yourself. Help is there if you want to take it.”
Garside-Neville, of Hillington Square, Lynn, was given an 18-week jail term suspended for 12 months and community order with drug rehabilitation requirement, at the Lynn court on Wednesday.
Garside-Neville admitted stealing clothes, goods and food from Next, Halfords and Aldi, in Lynn, in November and December, possession of cannabis and amphetamines in December and cannabis in November and handling a stolen Manchester United shirt in January.
Neil Meacham, mitigating, said: “It is plain to see Mr Garside-Neville has got a serious choice to make.
“Either he continues in the same vein and is going to serve ever increasing lengthy periods in custody or he takes this opportunity to get stuck into the drug rehabilitation order. “
