Man accused over web dating profile
A WEST Norfolk businessman has appeared in court accused of setting up a false profile for his estranged wife on dating websites in breach of a restraining order.
Terrence John Widdison, 53, of St Peter’s Road, West Lynn, denied breaching the order made by Lynn County Court when he appeared at the town’s magistrates’ court on Friday.
The alleged breach states that between May 13 and July 19 last year at Lynn, without reasonable excuse, Widdison created a false dating profile in his wife’s name and encouraged others to communicate with her through this profile.
The court was told the action breached the non-molestation order issued by the Lynn County Court, which runs until July, and was also contrary to the terms of the Family Law Act 1996.
But Mr Widdison, who was representing himself in court, pleaded not guilty to the charge and elected to stand trial at crown court. He said he could not afford to pay for legal advice from a solicitor.
But clerk Cliff Lodge told him that he might be entitled to state-assisted representation in the crown court.
Mr Widdison told the magistrates: “I work abroad a lot and I’m backwards and forwards all over the world.”
The court was told that Mr Widdison and his wife were currently going through divorce proceedings.
The case was adjourned until March 15 for committal proceedings and Widdison was granted unconditional bail.
