Man jailed for attack on partner

A MAN who put the mother of his seven-month-old baby in fear of her life by grabbing her round the throat and stopping her breathing was jailed for nine weeks by West Norfolk magistrates on Friday.

Presiding magistrate Louise Barber told Viktors Bojaruns, 44, of Saddlebow Road, South Lynn, that he was going to prison as he had tried to strangle his partner, had used excessive violence towards her in the presence of a young child and shown lack of remorse for his actions.

If he had not pleaded guilty to the assault, she said he would have been sent down for 12 weeks.

Yvonne Neill, prosecuting, said on December 29 Bojaruns was using a computer when his partner, who had been cleaning her house, asked him for some help.

He started insulting her and when she told him to go, he threw her bag and a satellite navigation system across the kitchen floor and began pushing her.

In the garden, he pushed her over and she felt pain in her elbow, and in the hallway, he pushed her to the floor and she was punched or kicked in the back.

Ms Neill said: “He then grabbed her round the throat and squeezed, which stopped her from breathing for 15 to 20 seconds, and she was in fear of her life.

“As he left, he said, ‘If you call the police I will kill you’.”

The victim suffered a graze on her forehead, a large bruise and bleeding under the skin on the left elbow and red marks around her throat. She was also concerned for her baby.

The court heard Bojaruns had no previous convictions and Ms Neill said: “The parties are hoping to get back together again and the victim doesn’t want a restraining order on him.”

George Sorrell, mitigating, said: “This was a nasty and unpleasant incident.”

He said Bojaruns came to this country from Latvia three years ago to find work.

He first met his partner about 18 years ago and they got together again about two years ago. They lived together and have a seven-month-old child.

But in November, the defendant lost his job, finances were not good and on December 29 he had been on the computer trying to find work and cheap parts for his car.

Bojaruns accepted that resorting to violence when his girlfriend asked for help with the housework was “totally unacceptable”, he said.
