MP Truss hails ‘hot metal’ moves
SOUTH West Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss has hailed moves by the Government to prohibit cash payments for scrap metal with a significant increase in fines.
In recent years metal theft has been a rising problem with church roofs, war memorials and railway cable all suffering at the hands of metal thieves.
Ms Truss said she was pleased Home Secretary Theresa May was tackling the ongoing problem.
After last week’s announcement, Ms Truss said: “It has a been a particular issue in South West Norfolk with Downham Market being one of the ‘hot spots’ for metal theft.
“This was an area of concern at the Country Land and Business Association meeting that I attended on Friday.
“It was also one of the points that I raised with Downham Market Police at the end of last year.
“Tougher legislation with significant fines will act as a deterrent to those who feel stealing scrap metal is an easy way to generate cash.”
