TILNEY ALL SAINTS: Unpaid work for smoke row attack

A man who trapped the woman he cares for inside an under-bed storage compartment in an assault has been sentenced to unpaid work.

Gareth Collins also dragged the woman along the floor by her feet following a row about him quitting smoking.

The 25-year-old, described in court as having “mild mental retardation”, told police he didn’t drag her by the arm as she “bruises easily and it wouldn’t have looked good.”

Lynn magistrates heard that Collins was the woman’s carer and the pair had also been in a relationship since moving in together around seven months ago.

Collins, of Glebe Estate, Tilney All Saints, admitted two charges of assault on January 16 and January 17 at a hearing last month, and was sentenced on Friday.

He was given an 18-month community order with 100 hours of unpaid work, domestic abuse activity requirement and supervision, and ordered to pay £100 costs.

Yvonne Neill, prosecuting, said that, on the first occasion, the couple were walking down an alleyway together when they had an argument about him stopping smoking cannabis.

She said he pushed her in the stomach and she stumbled back into a wall. The following day, they had another argument about his smoking and he “pushed her about a bit”.

Ms Neill added: “He then pushed her into a storage compartment of their bed and shut her in”.

He later packed her bags and told her to leave, but when she refused he “dragged her by her feet along the floor to the front door”.

In a police interview, Collins told officers he had “anger management issues” but said his partner knew how to “push his buttons” and make him angry.

Alison Muir, mitigating, said the victim was vulnerable but the defendant had his own difficulties too.

She said: “He has an IQ of 66-74 which is classed as mild mental retardation.”
