‘Wrong to speculate’ on death crash on A47
THE cause of a crash in which a well-known Fenland man died remains a mystery following an inquest this week.
Norfolk Coroner William Armstong recorded a verdict in a hearing at Lynn County Court on Monday that Roger Green, 77, died as the result of a road traffic collision.
The inquest heard Mr Green’s Nissan Almera had veered to the right across the A47 at Walsoken on July 8 last year, before colliding head-on with a black Audi.
Mr Green was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, where he later died.
Lee Worth, who had been driving the Audi back to Leicestershire from a weekend in Sheringham with his wife and eight-week-old baby, said: “Traffic coming from the opposite direction was passing normally. Then all of a sudden I saw a car come straight out in front of me, there was no warning at all.
“I shouted ‘Jesus’ and in the time I said ‘Jesus’ there was the loudest bang I have ever heard.
“That was followed by my car spinning round. It felt like a lot of spins – it just seemed to go on forever.”
Mr Worth’s wife was also airlifted to hospital.
Forensic collision investigator PC Wendy Biddle told the hearing she could not explain why Mr Green’s car had veered across the road, adding there were no mechanical faults on either car.
Mr Armstrong said they could only rule out possible causes of the crash, saying there was no question of alcohol, any medical condition, mechanical defect or adverse weather conditions being to blame.
He said: “Mr Worth is entirely blameless. The reason why Roger veered across the road remains a mystery and it would be quite wrong to speculate.”
