A man stole a bottle of aftershave to thank a friend for letting him stay at his home, a court was told.

Ricky Lear, 25, has been fined by Lynn magistrates after admitting a theft charge.

Prosecutor Giles Beaumont told yesterday’s hearing that Lear was seen in the Lynn Boots store picking up a bottle of Hugo Boss and putting it in his pocket before leaving.

Mr Beaumont told the court that Lear was hoping to steal the item to give as a thank you present to a friend.

The bench heard that Lear, who gave his address as St Edmundsbury Road, Lynn, is currently sofa surfing and has a heroin habit.

Mitigating Roger Glazebrook said Lear is taking methadone and attends AA meetings.

Mr Glazebrook said Lear was on Job Seekers Allowance but has been sanctioned after missing appointment but is applying for Employment and Support Allowance.

Mr Glazebrook said Lear is being helped with food by a family members and his probation officer is helping him to find accommodation.

Magistrates have fined Lear £40. He was ordered to pay £20 victim surcharge and £150 court charge.
