NORTH LYNN: Stole while out on licence

A convicted burglar has appeared in court after stealing DVDs while out on licence from prison.

Brendan Mooney, who was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment in July 2011 for burglary, was in the dock at Lynn Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

The 27-year-old, of St Edmundsbury Road, North Lynn, admitted stealing three DVDs, valued at £31.97, from Matalan in Lynn on February 1.

Gary Mayle, prosecuting, said Mooney was seen by store security taking the tags off the DVDs before concealing them in his trousers.

He said: “Security staff were waiting outside for him but he ran off. There was a chase but he fell over and was apprehended.”

In mitigation, Claire Williamson said Mooney stole the DVDs with the intention of selling them on, as he was in “desperate need of money”.

She said he had forgotten to sign-on for his benefits, and was currently receiving hardship payments.

She also said he went into the store to look around, but “temptation took hold” as the DVD display was near the exit.

The court heard Mooney had not been recalled to prison as a result of the offence, but had received a Chief Officer’s warning.

He was fined £50 for the theft, with £20 costs.
